The president doesnt need Publicity. now some may think it was for political reasons, but that argument doenst hold water. 1. He repealed “Dont Ask Dont Tell” and does not enforce the “Defense of Marriage” anti-gay act. So this proclamation matches with what his administration has done. and 2. You can’t say this was a sure fire, 100% good idea politically. this could easily end up hurting him in the election. and its not like stating this is gonna get more voters for him. Anyone who was pro-gay rights and is voting on that issue alone, was never gonna vote for Mitt Romney anyway. Since Romney has been anti gay-marriage for some time now.
So i believe he means it. And while it does not mean gay marriage is gonna become legal, maybe even if he is reelected. Symbolically, it is a big big deal. With so many states banning gay marriage, and with such a high gay teen suicide rate. having the president of the united states say he believes you have the right to get married. Thats a big fucking deal. “you are not alone. You are not wrong. you are not worthless. There are people who believe in you. The President of the United States believes in you.”
